Images

For years I have attended Shakespeare in the Park so I decided to go to the website and view some pictures from the production of the Tempest. http://proofsheet.com/public_theater/tempest/index.htm There are some really cool pictures.

As for the websites listed on Allen's website I was intrigued with a picture located on Emory. It is by James Henry Nixon. The colors remind me of fire and ice. There is a roughness of the water and then ariel is a young woman with long hair and wings,; everything you would think of when imagining a fairy. On wikipedia.com there is a picture by William Hogarth and it has Miranda, Prospero and even Caliban and Ariel. It's an interesting version. And then finally a picture that was discussed during class in my group was on Emory and by James Ward. It represents the two different sides, dark and light. There is a rainbow of happiness and perfection. Then you see this gargoyle looking figure being pinched by frightening creatures. It almost makes you have pity for Caliban

The Tempest

Well I am a Shakespeare fan. I have read, listened, watched and even performed several of his plays. The Tempest, however, is my least favorite. I don't know it just doesn't move me as much as some of his other works such as Othello or Macbeth even Twelfth night and As You Like It. It's a short play which, is nice but I think that there is a lot of information Shakespeare could have elaborated on.
In the Tempest it is a matter of black and white, winter and summer. Such extremes are shown throughout the play. An example is when Gonzalo speaks of having a utopia society or world and then having Antonio and Sebastian mock him or even think he is crazy. It's interesting the distinction between men and monsters because in a way aren't all men monsters? (no offense). No one is perfect and no matter how much magic you have you will still have a little monster in you. It's only natural to want to be powerful and have justice. The whole play is a game that is expressed in the last scene with Prospero revealing Ferdinand and Miranda playing chess, a game of thought, technique, skill and power. This play could be interpreted in so many different ways. It just depends on what you want to see and not see.

Marxism

This is really cool because I took a philosophy class last semster and fell in love with it. I can't wait to take another one. So with that being said I am going to focus on Marxism. Marxism is a philosophy and social theory. It is made up of about 8 main ideas or concepts. Mode production is the relations between people an dthe objects of their work and the relations between social classes. Base and superstructure comprises that society's ideology as well as it's legal, political and religion system. Ideology is false consciousness. Historical matericalism occur with changes in human society. Then there is class consciousness, alienation, political economy, and exploitation. All of these ideas contribute to the recent book we read: An Island like you. Religion seems to be a huge influence of the book. As we reviewed the chapters today online I noticed that several of the pages had a church influence mentioned. This can go into the category of base and superstructue. As for historical materialism you can see in the first chapter and then in the last few chapters. The elders aren't open to the idea of a gay relationship. The book is about social class, which is the basis of Marxism. Therer are too many examples to list- I would be typing all day and pretty much the whole book.

In class

http://www.aljazeera.com/me.asp?service_ID=11896
Here we have undefined, unexplained deaths everyday but how many can we say are caused from an experiment with weapons? Also yeah we are sad because our loved ones die but how many of us have to experience holding our 5 year old child that is dieing in your arms? Not too many can say they have experience that. That has to be the worst feeling in the world. I don’t care who it is no one should have to go through that.

Here is an article that is about Saddam writing to his country’s victory that is soon to come and how instead of being in rage and wanting revenge, to forgive those whom have been traitors. What I found fascinating were the comments that readers wrote at the end of the article. Obviously you had citizens of the U.S. saying Saddam deserves to be put to death and that he is the mass murderer not Bush. Then you have Saddam supporters who feel that he is the greatest leader to grace this planet.

War some more

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Israel-Lebanon_conflict
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_War
I just looked up the Lebanon war and the war in Iraq on wikipedia and the results are within the website.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/18/AR2006101801361.html
Senator Joe Lieberman had a debate on the war in Iraq. He said that "No one wants to end the war in Iraq more than I do" but he feels that they have to do it the right way and when the job is done. Republican and Independent candidates feel that they need to get the military troops out a.s.a.p.

These are few poems that are about war. One that stuck out to me is “Dear Mr. President” it is a letter written to President Bush from and Iraqis.

This website is full of information and pictures and videos. There is almost too much information to take in.

War websites

I started at msnbc.com and it had a whole page that was dedicated to specific articles on the war in Iraq. The website is: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3042924/
There were some videos and pictures but I didn't feel like they truly expressed what was really going on. On cnn.c
om however, had a bit more to offer. It included day to day actions, weapons used, people involved. The website is:
http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003/iraq/
Interesting enough when I typed in "War in Iraq" under google.com's images I saw some horrific images:
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=war%20in%20Iraq&btnG=Google+Search&sa=N&tab=wi
It isn't hard to find information about the war. All you have to do is type in "War in Iraq" or whatever war you are looking for and thousands and thousands of websites appear within seconds. It's impossible to visit each and every one. Not to mention some of the websites are just blogs written by random people ranting and raving about the war; others include nonsense that is about as true as a tabloid.

War

My feelings right now are about shot. 9/11, my personal experience and connections with the war right now, the troubling nightmares, and now to top it off I am watching a burning apartment building from a plane crash in my neighborhood of New York; just praying that my boyfriend is alright and that it wasn’t an act of terrorism have sent me into an unnerving state of mind at this moment. As the years went on my fears have only grown stronger. So this section of this class I know is going to be a passionate yet tough section for me to get through.
Here, we have George Orwell, who wrote the controversial 1984. He did a fantastic job with that book and I think has shown great imagery in this piece. And the ending line really brings the whole thing into perspective.

Now I decided to discuss the works of Tim O’Brian. I remember reading “The things they carried” in high school. I was astonished by how real the story was. It intrigued me that when we were in discussion on Tuesday we discussed the numbness of things and why these men can’t talk about their experience to anyone is because no one will ever really know what happened unless they were there. His story even includes romance and how one of his friends’ girlfriends goes to Vietnam and ends up being sucked into the atmosphere and now she is a completely different person. Once filled with beauty is now filled with pain. The dates, names and events change but the memories will never die.

My Odysseus

Oh Muse of mine, come and take over me so I may tell the story that has been told from sea to sea, land to land; the story of a man, more like a hero, who traveled as far and wide as the story is told. Troy was the start of it all. After he had sacked the sacred citadel of Troy and sucked in the life of the men around him he took on the vigorous sea; then was weakened by many afflictions. All this hero wanted to accomplish was return his comrades to their homes and see the face of his gentle loving wife.
As in life the sea takes sudden turns. Drove to the crime by desperate starvation did they stash the oxen of Helios in their abdomens. It was the apple of the Forbidden Garden. Little did they know nor concern themselves that it would lead to an unappealing adventure home that would test their abilities to the highest.
This so called hero goes by the name Odysseus. Odysseus craved his wife and would sacrifice the world made of blue and green to be with her. Yet, the fair and beautiful goddess Calypso yearned for the young Odysseus to be her Lord, her knight and shining armor, her lover, her slave. In the dark, hollow caves did he lay. Season after season, the sun, snow, rain and leaves he watched until the Gods felt it was time that he return to his family in the far land of Ithaca.
All the Gods had favored Odysseus and treated him like their own son except for Poseidon, whose only concern was to tear Odysseus into pieces- millions of pieces that could be thrown into the air as if it were confetti. The rage of Poseidon continued until he returned to his precious home of Ethiopians. It is the remotest part that one can imagine.

Here I used Butler, Littmore, and Myatt for this assignment. It is far from the greatest thing that I have produced but it is what it is; not everyone can write about everything.
